Today was all about the fantastic scenery of Scotland, we set off and took the main road out of Inverness but turned off at the Mam Ratagan Pass on the road to Corran, luckily it was Chris’ turn to drive and as the road got narrower and had more bends I think he began to think that maybe I had set him up! However it was well worth the hundreds of passing places. Corran is the village at the end of the road, it is a small fishing village which currently has about 10 houses, but along with Arnisdale (the next village) had once been quite a thriving community with a school and a couple of churches but a combination of famine and unforgiving landlords meant a large number of the townspeople emigrated and the community dwindled, according to the information boards in the community centre this is changing and there are now a few young families moving back into the area. Also they are taking part in a trial for super fast board and in remote areas and are purported to have the fastest broadband connection in the highlands! We sat and had lunch overlooking where the Loch meets the sea and as we had lunch the weather cleared and we had a gloriously sunny afternoon.
We had to retrace out steps down the same narrow winding road to our next stop which was Eilean Doran Castle (of shortbread biscuit tin fame). It is remarkably well preserved, and a stunning location right on a small island. After that we set off back to return to Inverness but drove back ‘over the top’ rather than the way we came. Part of the drive took us to the Kyle of Lochalsh which is where the Skye bridge is so we drove over the bridge but didn’t have time to explore so we just drove back over the bridge then came back to Inverness from the north.
