Unfortunately the weather has turned and the day started cloudy and a bit cold, so we set off for Fort George wearing a number of layers to cope with any conditions, as it turned out that was a good thing as it was really windy on the top of the ramparts. The fort is massive and still a working fort and seemed to be hosting a visit from the Gurkhas who arrived with us and then realised they should have entered via the military entrance! We stood on the ramparts looking for dolphins but didn’t see any. We decided to go round the highland museum which was really interesting as it explained the history of each of the regiments and how they have now merged / amalgamated. We stopped for lunch at the cafe as we had spent so long looking round, then continued our tour of the Fort.
Once we had finished looking round we set off for Cawdor Castle which isn’t a castle at all but a stately home with a tower. I think that it is still the home of the Cawdor family as there are a number of family photos throughout, there are a number of rooms you can go through and the information boards were obviously written by someone with a sense of humour as half way through one it says ‘am I boring you’ or something similar, but again it was well worth the visit.
Our final stop of the day was Culloden battle field the site of the final battle of the Jacobite rising as it was raining again we decided to head back and relax before heading out to get something to eat.
