Today was a very long day as we decided to drive to John o’ Groats, unfortunately the Scottish weather is still not playing nice and it was raining when we left and it has pretty much rained all day, although we did have some breaks in the cloud which gave us spectacular views of the East Coast of Scotland, funnily enough when we got to John O’Groats there weren’t many people visiting so we had lunch trying to decide which islands we could see, then braved the wind and the rain to go and stand at the northern most inhabited point of mainland Britain. We didn’t stay outside for long as it was so cold so we jumped back into the car and set off for Castle Mey. This was the only property the Queen Mother owned in her own right, she brought it in the 1950’s when it was rather run down and it took 3 years to re-model it. It is really small for a royal palace it has 38 rooms (Buckingham palace has 320) but it is really nice, however she didn’t have central heating put in at any point and a lot of the rooms don’t have fireplaces so it must have been really cold when she come to stay in October. Also she rented a TV and radio when she first moved in and was still renting one when she died in 2001!
We stopped for coffee before driving back down south to Inverness. Again the weather wasn’t too great and we did an amount of it in cloud but we got back about 7.30 in time for a relaxing evening and a well earned drink!
