Today we decided to go to Limassol, I had found a walk around the old town which looked quite good. When we arrived we managed to find a parking space quite easily which neither Chris or I actually expected as Limassol has a beech running all the way along it. We parked up and popped into tourist information to get a more detailed map of the town. The lady in tourist information was very helpful and also identified a couple of other places near by that we might like to visit. Just round from here is Limassol castle which has been restored and was used by most people that ruled over the years, built by the Byzantine, later occupied by Venetian, Ottoman and British. From here we walked up to the old market which was open until 12.00 but unfortunately either not everyone attends on Saturday or as it was gone 12 a lot of people had packed up. We decided we needed to stop at least for a drink but as it was almost 1pm we decided to have lunch. After lunch we set off for the walk round the old streets of Limassol. We saw Cami Kabir (the city’s largess mosque, Chris and dad could probably have gone in but mum and I couldn’t so no one did. We went round to Agia Napa Cathedral which is an Orthodox cathedral that we should have been able to go round but unfortunately was locked up. We walked down to Fishermen’s harbour area where we had a coffee and decided we would take the advice of the lady in tourist information and go to Kourion. Which was a spectacular Roman settlement on the top of a cliff just to the west of Limassol. There is a fully restored Roman theatre, some spectacular mosaics and baths in the villa of Eustolios, as well as The Agora complex which contained a series of public buildings including a really large public bath area. Further round the complex contained a couple more houses again with mosaics and an early Christian basilica. We finished walking round the site then set off back to the car for the drive back, we got back to the villa about 6.45 had a quick swim then set off in search of the pizza restaurant again, having gone the right way it was actually quite easy to find! The food was really good, I am glad we didn’t give up on the place. We didn’t get back until quite late but it was a really good day.
