Early start today as we planned to visit Paphos and the archeological site that is a world heritage site. It took just over 2 hours to get there and we found the site (and car park) on the first attempt. The site is massive and covers 4 era’s. The remains of a number or houses have been uncovered, all with spectacular mosaic floors I think the sign said that there are 550 square metres of mosaic, most of which are quite complete. Most of the site is outside, with only a couple of buildings under cover, but we managed to cover most of it including the remains of the castle which is much later – from the ottoman era. The most impressive house was the house of Dionysos which really gave a good view of the size of the houses. It took about 3 hours to do the whole site so by the time we had finished it was time for lunch and multiple bottles of water! Fully recharged and relaxed we set off for the castle which is actually really small, although provides fantastic views out over the sea there isn’t anything much inside but cells which were used to hold prisoners until the British came along then it was used to store salt. Our final stop of the day was the Tombs of the Kings, no royalty have actually been buried there but it is another complex of a number of tombs, all underground and carved into the rock, they were designed to be similar to houses and important people were buried with gold and their favourite possessions. Unfortunately they have been long since looted and none of the artefacts remain but the complex is very spectacular. By this time it was just after 4pm so after a stop to pick up more water we set off back to the villa. We arrived back about 6.30 and I had a quick swim then it was time for our early evening drink and review of photos and blogs.
