Saturday 3rd September 2016 – A fond farewell to Washington

So today we have to head back to the UK , but luckily we had agreed with the apartment owner that we didn’t need to leave until 1pm, so rather than sit around the apartment we decided to go out for a walk. The area we are staying in is part of the historic downtown area and there is a walk around the main areas which covers the rise, fall and rise again of the area. Originally a nice uptown area, it became home to a multicultural society filled with enterprising immigrants that moved in and started businesses but unfortunately it gradually became a rather down trodden area and after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr was the scene of rioting and looting where a number of the historic buildings were burnt down changing the face of neighbourhood for ever. It was these riots that created the space to allow the building of the conference centre as well as the demolition of a number of historic houses, shops and churches. The walk took us about an hour and a half after which we went back to the apartment had a shower, changed and packed ready to be picked up to go to the airport. Check-in wasn’t open when we arrived so we went and had lunch by which time we could dump the backs, get through security and still have a couple of hours in the lounge before getting on the flight.

  1. A trip down memory lane seeing all of the pictures of Washington, particularly my favourite – the Jefferson memorial.

  2. Thanks, we liked the location but it is so hard to chose which is the best – still can’t get over how big everything is.
