The plan was to drive to Ambleside today and stop for our packed lunch at one of the service stations, however, just as we reached junction 12 of the M6 we saw the tourist signs for Shugborough and decided to make a quick visit and use it is a lunch stop. The apartments previously used by Patrick Lichfield were closed for restoration, but we could still wander around the ground floor of the main house. For a rich persons house funded by the seizure of a Spanish warship carrying silver, it is fairly plain and unimpressive compared to others of the time, nonetheless it was quite interest and we managed to consume a cream tea before returning to the car where we than sat and ate our packed lunch! It took a further 2.5 hours to reach Ambleside and we arrived at our rented flat at 4.30pm. It is right in the middle of Ambleside on the main road surrounded by restaurants and about 15 mins walk to Lake Windermere. Beer is in the fridge so we can chill and relax and be ready to start exploring tomorrow.
