Sunday 23rd July – We are in Spain but the rain isn’t

When we booked this holiday an afternoon flight seemed like a good idea, but after we got up, had breakfast and checked we had locked up and put everything in the safe it was still only 9.00, too early to head off to the airport, too short to actually start anything so we did some bits and bobs and finally the taxi arrived. Because South West trains were running a delayed service we actually got the train before the one we planned but it was only actually about 15 minutes earlier than we planned. The journey across to City airport worked out really well, providing great views from the DLR of people walking across the top of the O2 – in the rain, and the Thames barrier which we couldn’t tell if it was open or not, then with the self tagging for the bags we were checked in and bags dropped within 15 minutes of getting off the DLR. The only downside of all of this is that BA don’t have a lounge or a code share so we had to sit in the bar and pay for our own drinks! All the same we got a spot by the window – although much to Chris’ disgust we couldn’t look out and settled in for a couple of hours of passing the time, something I am a lot better at than Chris, I played my game until I ran out of lives, read my book until my eyes started closing and went for a wonder then it was time to get on the plane. The benefit of flying from a provincial airport is that the planes are small so there were only 2 seats each side and unlike the flight to Zagreb we were served drinks on this flight but no film to keep me occupied so I just played my game and read my book while Chris dozed off the effects of the beers. We landed on time and our bags didn’t take long to come through so in 98.6 F heat – at 7pm, we headed straight out and into a taxi meaning that we were in the hotel, unpacked and in the bar before 7.30 local time ready to explore the city tomorrow, I think it is going to be hot!
