Our route today is to Bar Harbour which is about four hours if you take the direct route or five and a half hours if you go the way we are planning! We went to the deli to get some sandwiches for the journey then set off about 8.45. As we had visited one of the lighthouses yesterday we decided to use the interstate for the first part of the journey to reduce the travel time, this was a real bargain at one dollar for the ten or so miles we traveled on it, however the next bit which was probably only two miles was also one dollar so I am not sure how they work these things out! Our first stop, other than to change over driving, was Rockland Owl Light which is actually a beacon not a light as it is on continuously, it was built in 1852 and the light is 100 feet above sea level. The former light keepers house is now a museum where you can arrange to go up the light if you want but it all seemed pretty deserted so we walked to the lighthouse and admired the fantastic views, this whole area is just a series of inlets and islands, you can understand why there are so many lights along the coast. From here we drove to Camden which is a small town that is mostly for tourists, but we walked round it all the same, we then drove up to the top of Mount Battie which is just outside the town but gives fantastic views all round both to the hills and mountains in the distance and also the sea and islands. The trees on the hills are just starting to change colour although they are still predominantly green we did see some yellow and reds in the distance. Interestingly it seemed to be the trees lower down that had changed rather than the ones that look more exposed at the top, we could really do with it getting a little bit cooler as it is still almost 70 degrees every day at the moment. From here we set off to Bar Harbour which is still a couple of hours away along route 1 where we had further evidence of the trees changing and there are definitely parts of the road where if only we could stop we would get some fantastic views. We made a quick stop at a Wallmart to stock up on supplies and again marvelled at the fact that you can go and do your weekly shop, washing power, beer, hand gun, rifle and no-one thinks anything of it! We finally arrived at the hotel about 6pm and after dropping the stuff in the room went to the laundry as it has been a while since we did any! Then it was onto the free shuttle bus to town to get something to eat and back to the room to relax after a good but long day.
