Saturday 7th October – A tour round Schoodic and Bar Harbour

When we were at the top of the Cadillac mountain yesterday Schoodic peninsular looked like it had a lot of trees that had changed colour so today we set off in search of them. We started off on route 3 which has a diversion on route so we drove through a really residential area before joining the scenic highway on the Schoodic peninsular. This is the only part of the Acadia National Park that is located on the mainland, I am not sure if it is because it is further east or something to do with the location but the trees had definitely changed colour more here than in Bar Harbour. As we drove we stopped a number of times then drove all the way to the bottom to Schoodic point which seems to be a magnet for artists as there were loads of them dotted around the point painting the view, I have to say some reflected what we were seeing more than others. We stopped and had our picnic lunch overlooking the sea then continued around the peninsular. We drove to Prospect harbour lighthouse which is still an active military base so we had to be careful about how we took pictures, then headed back to Bar Harbour again stopping at a number of scenic spots along the way. We went back to the hotel and dropped the car then went for a walk down to Bar Harbour. From the hotel we can walk along the historic route which describes a few of the house along West Street, it would seem that this was another playground of the rich and famous during the late 1800 / early 1900’s and the houses were either built at hotels / guest houses for the summer traffic, or as summer cottages for the rich. The only exception to this was one of the hotels had previously been a gentlemen’s club that seems to have been exclusively used by the New York set including the Vanderbilt’s and Kennedy’s. We walked down to the harbour front and joined the sea walk which is about half a mile and rather like the one at Newport takes you along the front of the magnificent houses that were built along the sea front. These are all hotels now with multiple apartments facing the sea so not quite as spectacular as in the 1800s. Once we had finished the walk we walked round town then decided to stop for a drink we then realised by the time we got back to the hotel it would be time to turn round again and come out for something to eat so we stopped at a sports bar at the end of the road which was probably a locals bar but was actually very nice. By the time we had eaten and got back to the hotel there was just time to update the website, watch a bit of baseball then head to bed as we have a long drive tomorrow.
