Thursday 25 Jan – Sun and empty slopes

The last few days have been very sunny but cold and we have explored a bit more of the town and the mountain. Tuesday saw us mostly saying around mid-Vail where there are some nice runs off a couple of lifts, but the snow is now more packed piste than powder so we decided we would swap out our skis for something that is more ‘all terrain’ than the powder ones we have been given. This meant that we had a very different ski on Wednesday as we had skis we felt we could control. We decided to stay on our side of the mountain and only go as far as mid Vail as they had closed the mid Vail gondola for maintenance so thought this would make the runs busy as people were pretty much trapped on the mountain but actually it wasn’t too bad. Wednesday evening we finally made it to the supermarket via the free van that runs from the condo complex, I have to say Vail may be more expensive but there are some very civilised features, the whole valet of skis and even when we changed them the guy came back to the condo to swap our skis out, and having a bus take us directly to the supermarket then come and get us when we were ready is really nice. Today it was actually quite overcast although the forecast isn’t for snow until tomorrow, this made the light really flat but we managed to ski all the way over to Two Elk Lodge which looks quite different from the outside but almost the same on the inside. We had a nice hot chocolate then skied some of the runs on that side of the mountain, unfortunately the snow really isn’t great on some of the runs, we could really do with some more, but by lunch time the clouds had moved away and it was sunny again so maybe the forecast is right after all and the snow wont come until tomorrow. We plan to go and explore the main area of Vail tonight, I imagine we will struggle to find anything we recognise, although I think the covered bridge is still there!
