Saturday 27 January – Let the hard work begin

Today we had booked in for a classic cross country lesson, thanks to our Christmas present from Mum and Dad. We have a group lesson today and a private one tomorrow, so today is all about classic skiing. We took the courtesy bus to the Golf club which in the winter is the Nordic ski centre and checked in with Julianne who is going to be our instructor today. After getting our boots and skis we had to wait around a little bit as we were early then it was time to set off and try and see how much we can remember from last year. First things first we went through how to put the skis on, stand up and then fall over, or more importantly how to get up again if we do fall over, then it was time to be let loose on the tracks. Julianne gave us a few exercises to try and get us to get our balance and also to start sliding rather than just dragging our feet through. My problem seemed to be that I didn’t look up enough, that and the fact that although I seemed to be able to bend one knee the other didn’t seem to want to bend much. The lesson was a little over an hour and at the end we went in for some much needed water and a bit of a rest we decided we would have lunch then went out for a bit of a practice, it definitely looks easier on the telly than it is in real life but was good fun all the same. We did about another hour and a half then decided we needed another break, we went and got some water then decided that we would actually call it a day as we have another lesson tomorrow but on skate this time. This is the one that Chris is really looking forward to as he can even skate on the classic skis! When we got back to the room we rewarded ourselves with a well earned beer then after a shower and something to eat it was time for bed and get ready to do it all again tomorrow!
