Tuesday 6 February – Be careful what you wish for

This morning the weather report said that we had 13 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, 8 of which in the last 8 hours and it was still snowing although very lightly so we suited up and set off for the hill. We went up in the Gondola and set off on Pride and Simba which are the runs that we default to when it is either busy or conditions are bad. It turns out that 8 inches of snow on groomed runs become bumpy very quickly and after a few weeks of very packed powder we seem to have completely forgotten how to ski powder! All the same we did a couple of runs and it finally came back then we decided to head over to mid vail, on the way the weather closed in really quickly and by the time we got to the mid vail restaurant we could hardly see a thing so despite sitting with our hot chocolate by the window we had virtually no view, the good news was that as we were sitting there the weather cleared a bit and by the time we were ready to go again it was definitely clearing. The bad news is that this was only a momentary thing and by the time we had got to the top of the chair lift the visibility had virtually vanished again! We managed to get back down and did a few more runs then as the weather closed in again so after a while we called it a day and went back to the room ready for another assault on the mountain tomorrow.
