As today is probably our last fine day before a couple of days of rain we decided to combine two walks although they are not very close to each other. The first was around the Museum quarter which backs onto the University quarter and was built around the same time. It consists of a number of very large museum buildings laid out round a central square, there are also a number of other buildings in the area, some of which were destroyed in WWII and either have been rebuilt to a similar style or have been completely destroyed and a modernistic building put in the same place. We zigzagged round the museum quarter and eventually ended up at the Lowenbraukeller which is the Lowenbrau beer Keller but as it was only about 11.00 we decided it was a little early for a drink so we walked across to the Isar region. Unfortunately this was actually quite a way but eventually we reached Maximilian Strauss which leads to the river. This area has a number of government buildings that are very grand and Maximilian Strauss leads to what was once Maximillaneum which was built as a school for gifted children of poor backgrounds but has now been taken over as a government building. They have built a modern building on the back that is still used for the school. We walked along the river where a few people were paddling to the Friendensengel which is the Angel of Peace built to commemorate the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. From here we walked round some of the residential streets until we reached Hofbraukeller which had a beer garden so we decided to stop for lunch. We sat in the garden and had sausage and chips / baked potato and a couple of beers which was really nice, then we continued with the walk. We went past Muller’sches Volkbad which is the public baths that has a swimming pool, sauna and massage area, we didn’t go inside but outside there wee a large number of people sunbathing on the banks of the Isar. I am sure that in the spring when the melt comes down from the mountain the water is a lot higher but at the moment it is very low and there is a quite a nice sandy area to rest before going for a swim. We stopped for an ice cream then continued on our walk. We finally got back to the Farmers Market where we had hoped to buy sandwiches for tomorrow but as it is Sunday everything seems to be closed so we ended up walking back to Karls Platz where we had started this mornings walk to find somewhere to buy a sandwich. Then it was time to head back to the hotel via the Beer Keller at the end of our road where we had a couple of beers, it started thundering so they decided to move everyone inside so we decided to head back to the hotel before the heavens opened. We got back about 5pm so had a relax before going out to get something to eat as we have an early start tomorrow.
