Friday 19th October – Start of the Whitsundays cruise

Today we are going to the boat for a couple of days cruising around the Whitsundays. Unfortunately although we have to check-in we don’t actually leave until 2:30 so we had a leisurely breakfast then went back to the room to decide what we needed to take with us, this is actually quite hard as it is really hot but also quite breezy so something very cool for the day and warmer for the evenings! We had managed to extend the check-out to 11:00 so at least we could sit in the room so I read some of my book then it was time to go to reception and check out. We have arranged to leave both our baggage and the car with the hotel and they will feed the meter every 24 hours so we don’t get a parking fine! We walked down to the boat checkin and completed the paperwork which was all done by about 11:30, we also met a Canadian couple who are on the boat with us, then we went for a walk round town and sat for a while at the lagoon watching everyone play in the water. We decided we should probably eat something before getting on the boat so we walked back down to one of the restaurants and had a pizza between us then it was time to buy a couple of bottles of wine for the cruise and head down to the meeting point. We got on the boat at 2:30 and had the safety briefing – basically don’t do anything stupid and there won’t be a problem then we were underway. We motored for the first hour then the sails went up and we made quite good progress. We moored between Whitsunday and Hook Islands and sat having a drink watching the sun go down. At about 7pm dinner was served which was really nice and some blue lights had been put on under the boat which attracts the fish and even a shark although only a very small one. We watched the fish for a while then everyone on board decided they were tired and so we all went off to our cabins for an early night as it will probably be an early day tomorrow.
