Saturday 24th November – Great Ocean Road Part 2

Today we are heading for Melbourne and will complete our journey along the great ocean road but before any of that we have to head for Grey River Road which is apparently the best place to see Koala’s in the wild. Unfortunately the weather is still a bit miserable but we worked on the assumption that they have a fur coat so they should still be out, how wrong could we be! We loaded up the car and went round to the bakery to get a sandwich for lunch then set off. We joined Grey River road at the top rather than the bottom – by the great ocean road to give us the most chance of being able to see a koala we saw a few rock wallaby’s crossing the road and heading back into the undergrowth which encouraged us, at least there is wildlife around these parts then we started driving down the road at 15 kph in an effort to see something, we even walked into the Forrest a bit where the smell of eucalyptus was really strong and we thought we heard snoring but we still didn’t actually see one. Safe to say that after a couple of hours and a number of false sightings we decided we would have to hope we saw them somewhere else, when right at the busiest part of the road where there are lots of people and cars we saw one sitting up in a tree dozing! It was great to finally see one although a few more would have been nice but at least the day wasn’t wasted! Just after seeing this Koala we re-joined the Great Ocean Road and continued to Torquay which is the end of the road. The journey was as spectacular as it was last night and we saw a few brave souls out surfing as well as a couple of hardy photographers with tripods facing the surf trying to get the perfect shot of a wave crashing onto the shore. At the end of the Ocean road you basically join a motorway to get to Melbourne and after a couple of attempts as they seem to be re-building the roads of Melbourne we managed to find the hotel. They only have a 10 minute parking bay so after we checked in and unloaded the car we drove round to Hertz to drop it off while the receptionist very kindly took our bags to the room. We managed to find a petrol station on route so that we could return the car full of fuel then walked back to the hotel to work out where we are going to go for something to eat tonight, it will probably be Chinese as we are about 100 yards from China Town!
