Saturday 15th December – Around Lakes Entrance

Today the weather has cleared again so after breakfast and a visit to tourist information we walked to the bridge which takes you over to the foot bridge that links the sand bar to the town. There is a massive sand bar between the town and the sea, previously there wasn’t any access to the sea so the Victorians cut a channel that is still in use today, the only problem they have is they have to constantly remove the sand from the entrance. We walked across the bridge and across about 100 metres of land and there was the sea, it was completely different the other side with the waves crashing and quite a stiff breeze. We walked down onto the beach then decided to start following the pathway towards the entrance. We knew we didn’t have time to walk all the way so we walked to the first lookout which as with most lookouts in Australia didn’t actually have a great view as there were a lot of trees in the way then we turned round and came back to have a walk around the town before we set off on our cruise at lunchtime. Rather than a war memorial, they have a number of statues on the Esplanade representing images from the First World War, they are really good and seem to have been carved out of a single piece of wood, there are a few depicting different things, there is one of a woman and her children and is called waiting for daddy. We walked round a few of them then went to the boat and had our lunch on a bench overlooking the dock then it was time to get on the boat. We had booked a three hour cruise that took us out to the entrance which is really narrow but we did see a couple of seals playing around in the surf, then the cruise took us to Metung. We went all the way down to Chinamans creek and around a few inlets looking at the massive array of birds from Pelicans to Cormorants as well as a couple of sea eagles. We had a look at some of the houses and boats on the shoreline, some of which have been there since the early 1800s when this was a thriving fishing port. We had a final visit to the entrance before heading back apparently we had only seen less than 8 percent of the lake system which shows how big it is. We continued walking round the town and looked at the remaining sculptures then we went back to the room for a bit of a relax and dinner.
