Monday 17th December – To the nations capital

After the hail storm’s of yesterday this morning we definitely had a change of weather and it was lovely but the damage from yesterday will take some clearing up, the owners of the motel seemed to have an army of people picking up litter, removing water from some of the rooms where it had filled the balcony and come into the room and talking to the owner just before we left he said that some of the air conditioning units had been damaged but luckily they are covered by insurance so hopefully all will be well. We drove into town and had breakfast before we started towards Canberra via the Sapphire coast. As we drove along the coast you could see why it is called that as the colour of the sea is wonderful and as school holidays have started in certain parts of Australia a few people were on the beach and some were even surfing, something they had obviously done before as they seemed to be quite good! We drove to Tathra Head which has a wharf and strangely a really nice memorial garden at the top of the hill which provides great views over the beach and the sea. We stood watching some fishermen that seemed to be fishing off the wrong side as on the other side of the wharf there seemed to be loads of fish but possibly they were the wrong kind! We continued driving round and our next stop was Bermagui where they have a salt water swimming pool in the rocks, the location was stunning with waves crashing over the rocks but total calm in the swimming pool which was a lovely shade of green but was actually called the blue pool. There were a number of people swimming in it and I have to say if we didn’t still have quite a way to go I think we would have got changed and gone for a swim as it has really warmed up again. We stood watching the waves for a while then continued to Narooma which is a town which has what looks like the most high risk harbour entrance but it could have been a by-product of yesterdays storm that meant the seas were running fast but the entrance was quite small and the sea was rushing in through it I think if you tried to get in you ran the risk of surfing so fast you would end up on shore! We walked along the sea front then went up to the view point and looked down on some surfers that seemed to be doing really well although it does seem a lot of effort once you have caught a wave having to swim back out again! We came down from the viewpoint then walked along the sea wall to the entrance, finally it was time to head in land and continue our journey to Canberra. The rest of the drive we went through a few historic towns and finally arrived in Canberra which is a really modern city, but more of that tomorrow. After unloading the car and going up to the room we decided to stay in the hotel for something to eat as we are not really sure where anything is yet, it is quite strange as we are in a ‘proper’ hotel rather than a boutique one so it doesn’t feel anywhere near as personal as the others have, although it is really nice so it will make a change for the next couple of nights.
