Although not quite as warm as yesterday it is still warm and although cloudy not raining so we set off for Lawson where there is a waterfall walk that has been around for more than a century but doesn’t seem to be that well used as it was a little overgrown in places but the positive was that we didn’t see another sole until the very end. Lawson was originally called Blue Mountain which apparently caused confusion for both tourists and locals so they changed the name to Lawson after William Lawson who was an English born explorer and politician who was the first white settler to cross the Blue Mountains together with Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth (who a town was also named after) in 1813. The start of the walk seemed to be down a waterfall which luckily didn’t have any water in it but it soon turned into a reasonable track and quite quickly we were at the first waterfall which was Adeline Falls, we got quite close to it but it wasn’t running as fast as we expected considering how much rain we have had but it was still quite a nice fall, we carried on through what felt like rainforest but is far too open so probably isn’t and to be honest I think it has the wrong type of trees! For some of the walk we were followed by a kookaburra which really does sound like it is laughing, just as we had decided we had probably missed the next waterfall we came across Junction Falls. This was probably my favourite as it was actually two waterfalls although we didn’t know that at first and you could get right up close to them. We spent quite some time here taking photos with Chris demonstrating his athletic prowess as we hadn’t taken the timer so he had to run to get into the picture a couple of times, then just watching the waterfall. We left this and as we went round the corner we saw the second waterfall which is probably why it is called the Junction as the two waterfalls seemed to run into the same river at this point. Our final waterfall was Cataract falls which was a bit disappointing but possibly because it was hard to get close to it and it didn’t seem to have much water running over it. After cataract falls it was just a case of walking back to the car which meant going back up the waterfall again then we followed the fire break to the car park. Our next stop was Wentworth falls where there should be a number of tracks to the waterfall, but unfortunately the recent storms have damaged the walkways and a number of them were closed so we walked to one of the view points which unusually for Australia actually gave us a good view of the falls. We walked back and went into the picnic area for lunch it is definitely a lot cooler today but it was nice being able to have lunch outside again. This afternoon we decided we would do the Blue Mountains scenic drive which is actually along the Great Western Highway and is a loop that should take a few hours, we stopped at Evans lookout which gave a fantastic view down the valley then continued the drive but the weather closed in so we decided to head back, we came across Victoria pass and as we rejoined the Great Western Highway the cloud came down again and we could hardly see so we had made the right decision to come back. Just as we got back the rain started and it is quite chilly so Chris lit the fire and we settled in for the evening.
