16 – 18th February Breckenridge

As we arrived in Denver on Saturday it was snowing and by the time we had collected our bags and checked in for the bus for the drive up the mountain a couple of inches had settled and there were a number of crashes on the interstate which luckily the drivers all tell each other about so our driver picked another route which meant that there was very little difference in the amount of time it took to get to Breckenridge. Even better we were the first people to be dropped off so we were in the apartment by about 6:30, not bad considering the conditions. After unpacking we went round to the mini-market to get breakfast supplies and actually managed to stay awake until about 10pm so hopefully the jet lag won’t be too much. Sunday morning we woke up early but as its Presidents weekend and the resort is very busy we didn’t bother hiring Alpine skis today so after breakfast we went round to the city market – the larger supermarket and brought enough supplies so that we can eat in the apartment if we want to. It was really worth doing as there is so much more choice that at the other one, we then set off for the Nordic centre to see if we can remember how to cross country ski. We decided to do classic skiing today so that we don’t pull anything too much, although I think Chris would have been happier with skate skis as he finds classic hard work whereas from what I can remember I find classic easier. We had a good time and pretty much remembered how it should be done but as with all these things the theory is easy, putting it into practice is the hard part. After lunch and a second round of skiing we decided we had probably done enough so went back to the apartment and after a shower just crashed for the evening. Monday and we walked down to the ski hire shop to pick up our Alpine skis, we got there just before they opened which meant that we were first to be served which meant that we were in and out really quickly. We came back to the room to get ready and put in the contact lenses to see how they work then set off for the slopes. It is a lovely day, clear blue skies but really busy at the lift so we decided to go in the singles line which meant we got to the top really quickly. There must have been an issue on the lift as the rest of the lifts weren’t that busy. We did a couple of runs and it all came back but skiing in contacts is amazing so easy and when we stopped we could actually walk into the restaurant without everything misting up! We did a few more runs then called it a day as the wind was picking up and it was getting quite cold on the lifts, I think I will have to wear a couple more layers tomorrow. We got back to the room had a relax then something to eat ready to start again tomorrow.
