Tuesday 19th – Friday 22nd February

Tuesday what a difference a day makes, yesterday’s sun has been replaced by quite heavy cloud and it is very cold. We went out skiing but gave up just after lunch as the light was getting quite flat and just as we packed up it started snowing and didn’t stop all evening. Wednesday started bright but it is so cold and there is a breeze that on the chair lift it feels like a freezing gale but luckily we have the right clothes. We stopped a few times to warm up and have a hot chocolate or two. Later in the afternoon the clouds came in again and the light went flat so we decided to call it a day. After a bit of a relax we walked down to the supermarket and picked up some supplies then came back for a shower before going out for something to eat. Thursday and the sun has returned, we looked at the forecast this morning and there was a weather advisory for a snow storm but luckily it isn’t scheduled to arrive until later so we made the most of the sunny skies and slightly warmer temperatures and did most of the runs on peak 9. After a stop for something to eat and a hot chocolate we hit the slopes again but unfortunately the forecast was correct and the cloud started gathering and the light went very flat so we decided to ski back down but we have done a few more runs each day so we are obviously acclimatising. Friday so the promised storm didn’t appear last night, we only had about an inch of snow and woke up this morning to relatively clear skies. They are still forecasting the storm but not until later so we set off up the mountain to see what it was like. It seemed very busy at the lift so we went into the singles line which got us to the top really quickly. We had a few great runs and it wasn’t too busy although we tended to use the singles line each time, the forecast suggested that it was a bit warmer today but as the wind has increased it didn’t feel it. We decided to ski down to the beaver run chair before heading back up for a hot chocolate stop only to find one of the biggest queues we have seen in Breckenridge for a long while so we decided to head to the quicksilver lift and if that was as busy we would stop for a chocolate at Maggie’s until the queue cleared a bit. Unfortunately the queue didn’t clear and the light went really flat so we decided we would have the afternoon off and go for a walk around town. We started off by having a walk around Maggie’s pond then went down one side of Main Street and back up the other. Breckenridge is really nice as it still has so many of the old buildings although most have been remodelled inside the look of the street still feels very authentic, we also found out today that Breckenridge is the oldest Colorado town this side of the continental divide. We came back to the room to relax and get ready for cross country skiing tomorrow.
