Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th – Nordic skiing

Saturday we had always planned to do cross country today as it is normally quite busy at the weekend but we hadn’t realised quite how busy it was going to be, the gondola had a queue that almost went round the transit centre, it was so bad people were taking the bus up the hill rather than wait in the queue and the bus was so busy we couldn’t actually get off at the Nordic centre so we had to do the full route. We checked in and decided to do skate today which Chris found easier than I did although eventually it all came back including how exhausting it is! We did a circuit then came in for a much needed rest and a hot chocolate, then we did a slightly longer circuit which is mostly green but we had to go under the bridge which is quite steep and neither of us got enough speed up to make it up the other side. The wind picked up a bit this afternoon which meant that occasionally we were skiing in white out conditions when it blew all the snow out of the trees. By the time we had completed this circuit I was completely shattered so we went in and had some lunch then decided to call it a day as we will be having another go tomorrow. Sunday and as we walked to the bus it didn’t seem as busy today as it was yesterday although the car park was quite full so maybe everyone had gone up early. We got to the Nordic centre and picked up our skis and boots then set off to see if we could remember how to do this. I think that Chris has got it and I definitely have my moments but probably need a bit more confidence and definitely better balance. We did a circuit then went in for a necessary hot chocolate to recover a bit. After the hot chocolate we went out again and just practiced a combination of skating with and without poles as well as trying to get the rhythm right to get some forward momentum. We are definitely improving and as you start to get the technique right it isn’t quite as exhausting! We stopped for lunch then Chris had another go while I rested my leg as I pulled it a little bit and to be honest I was pretty shattered as well. After we packed up we popped round to the supermarket to pick up some supplies. Came back to the room for a shower and relax before having something to eat. It’s back to Alpine skiing tomorrow so hopefully we will remember how to do it!

  1. We thought you had both improved on 24th. Practice makes perfect but it looks blooming exhausting! Glad to see some blue skies.

  2. I think we needed a few more sessions in the gym but it is definitely nice to see the sun with a bit less wind chill!
