Monday 4th March – Thursday 7th March

Monday after 3 feet of snow in the last 48 hours by the time we got to the lifts this morning the snow had stopped and it was clear blue skies the weather certainly changes quickly here! The slopes had been groomed last night but with the snow it didn’t take long for the runs to become bumpy and full of moguls. We found out that Denver had declared a snow day which is why it was busy we also found out that if a snow day is called then it is the parents responsibility to make sure the children can ski which is probably why they all head for the slopes. We decided to have an early lunch break which would mean that we could ski while everyone else was at lunch and the lifts would hopefully be a little less busy which was the case. We rode the singles line until lunch then didn’t really have any problems at all. We got quite good at the soft moguls but they are hard work in the knees and mid afternoon we decided to call it a day as the light was starting to go flat and that is when accidents occur. All the same it was nice to be skiing in powder even if it was hard work. Tuesday it is skill clear skies and the ru s have been groomed overnight so today’s skiing was a little easier than yesterday although there are still quite a few people on the slopes but we found out this is because Louisiana have the whole of the week around Mardi Gras (or shrove Tuesday as we call it) off and they all come skiing! We met a couple on the lift who said that they had been I. Louisiana last week and the parting had already started so they weren’t surprised that everyone had come here this week. We finished skiing mid afternoon again then went round to the supermarket to pick up a few things, we had originally planned to watch the parade but it has been cancelled because of all the snow which seems rather ironic considering this is a ski resort! There is another winter storm warning heading our way so we decided to change the shuttle on Saturday just in case there are issues getting back down the mountain. Wednesday there is another winter storm warning which is due to arrive this afternoon / evening so we set off this morning hoping to get some runs in before it arrived. The weather in the mountains is very strange, our first couple of runs were really good then slowly it warmed up making the runs quite slushy then it got really dark and finally the snow arrived. We skied until lunch then packed up as it was still really warm and the snow was turning to rain so we decided to have a relaxing afternoon and hope the rain turns to snow but by mid afternoon it was still raining so I am not sure we are going to get the 7 – 14 inches they said we would. Thursday, we woke up this morning to almost one and a half foot of new snow, 16inches to be precise and it is still snowing, the bed news is despite all this snow most of the mountain is closed either because of the risk of avalanche or because they physically couldn’t get people to the lifts to open them so we decided to have a day off and just go for a walk around town. We left it until lunch time and then walked into town to get something to eat. A few of the restaurants were closed be we ended up going into somewhere we hadn’t been before and had a really nice burger and a few drinks and while we were in the restaurant another couple of inches fell. The forecast is for this to continue until tomorrow morning who knows how much will have actually fallen by then, I don’t think I have ever seen so much snow!
