Sunday 27th October – From Sancti Spiritus to Camagüey

As you would expect on a Sunday morning in a town called Sancti Spiritus we or rather I was woken by the church bells at 6am, luckily they didn’t ring for too long so I just rolled over and went back to steep. When we went down to breakfast the bells were peeling again but this time we could actually see the guy that was in the tower banging them! After a very pleasant breakfast on the terrace we went back up to the room to pack up and get ready for our next town. We were picked up by the driver that had brought us to Trinidad he was called something like Davis as I had thought it was Elvis but he corrected me although neither Chris or I were sure what he said. It was scheduled to be about a 3 hour drive to Camagüey which would mean that we arrived around lunchtime. It is funny that we have been here two weeks today and already the sight of horse drawn carriages seems absolutely normal. This area is dedicated to Sugar production and we saw field after field of sugar cain as we drove along. As we started off there were a few rivers and we had a good view of the mountains but after that it was just cows, goats and sugar cain! About two hours into the journey Davis asked if we wanted to stop for a coffee, which we did mostly because we needed to stretch as the roads are a little warn this end of the island! It was obviously a ‘service station’ of sorts where we stoped as there were quite a few people, horse and carts and cars parked outside. It is quite strange that the drink driving message doesn’t seem to have quite made it to Cuba as every table had a bottle of rum on it and people were drinking Rum and Coke despite the fact it was only about 11:30! We arrived in Camagüey about 12:30 and Elvis had a bit of a problem finding the hotel, it turned out that it was down a pedestrian street which we established after stopping and asking so he dropped us off at the end of the road and we walked down to check in. We are finally in a hotel that has a pool that actually has water in it, we dropped the bags in the room then went up to the roof as there is a roof terrace in the hotel with great views over the city. It seems like it has been ‘regenerated’ as it all looks quite new but we will be able to see better tomorrow. We decided to check out the pool before going and getting changed into our swim suites and it was probably a good job we did, it turns out this is one of the hotels where they allow the locals in for a fee and there was a definite party going on, they had music and a barbecue , none of which we would mind but unfortunately there were not any chairs available so we decided to go for a bit of a walk around the hotel before we explore the area properly tomorrow. We walked around a few streets then decided to stop for a late lunch. We found a restaurant that you had to enter through the kitchen, they only sold pizza and pasta but we decided as it was getting late that would have to do. We both had pizza and it was ok but probably not the best one we have had and after a few beers we decided to go back to the hotel to see if anyone had left the pool, they hadn’t and it closes at 5pm so we decided to head back to the room to cool down a bit before either going out tonight or heading up to the roof to watch the sun go down before heading out to explore the town tomorrow.
