Monday 3rd – Thursday 6th February

Monday, I am not sure why we doubt the weather forecast but we still do, today it was ‘dangerously high winds’ with snow arriving at lunch time, undeterred we set off at about 9:00 under clear blue sky’s and a gentle breeze thinking that the forecast was wrong, we skied and stopped for chocolate about 11:00 by which time the wind had picked up a bit but wasn’t too bad and it had definitely clouded over but the skiing was good so after chocolate we set off for another couple of runs but the weather was definitely closing in, we did a few more runs but decided that actually it was changing quite quickly so we decided to ski back down and have lunch at Maggie’s, normally the weather at the bottom is a lot better than at the top which must have meant that the visibility at the top must have been virtually nil because as we were eating lunch we couldn’t actually see the buildings across the pond as it was snowing so hard, therefore once again the forecast was exactly right. We decided that we didn’t need to ski in those conditions so we went back to the apartment and had an afternoon off, we watched the snow through the window and it didn’t seem to ease up until quite late in the evening so we were glad that we had called it a day. Tuesday we got up expecting a lot of powder this morning because of all the snow yesterday but the snow report said that there had only been 3 inches yesterday which I have to say I am surprised by and the sky’s had cleared and it looked like a wonderful day, what we hadn’t factored in was the fact that the temperature had plummeted and it was -20C when we set off this morning, what we hadn’t factored in was the wind chill and despite wearing extra layers we got quite cold on the lift so after a few runs we decided to stop for an early hot chocolate to warm up, it seemed like pretty much everyone on the mountain had the same thought as it was quite busy in the restaurant but we found a seat and warmed up. We went back out for another couple of runs but gave up at lunch time again as we were not enjoying it and the temperature had only gone up a couple of degrees to -18C so we went to Mia Casa for lunch as we haven’t had a Mexican so far this holiday, after a very enjoyable lunch we went for a walk around town and even walking up main street was really cold so we decided to head back to the apartment to warm up. By about 4:30 the weather closed in again and a very fine snow started so perhaps it will be a bit warmer tomorrow and we will have our powder skiing after all. Wednesday, today is probably the coldest day we have had so far, the temperature was in the minus F it was so cold that we could only ski for about an hour before we had to go in and warm up. We actually gave in and brought face masks as the wind chill was making it very cold. We managed to ski until about 2:30 then decided to give up as we really needed to warm up. We got back to the apartment and there was a problem in that none of the keys we had worked. Luckily we were being serviced today and they were just leaving so we managed to get into the apartment and I sent a note to the owner who told us that Breck Services would be able to sort it, the problem was that the phone in the room doesn’t seem to be connected so we went down to the front desk who very kindly rang them for us and we managed to get an emergency card, they also arranged for a new set of keys to be delivered to us which arrived about an hour later so although it was a bit frustrating it was all sorted quite easily. Thursday, another cold day but at least we were a little more prepared for it. Having said that if anything it was a little colder as the wind was quite strong and it was snowing which made visibility virtually nil so we skied for a while then decided to call it a day as it wasn’t really much fun. We had lunch in town then went and brought me a pair of boot heaters so I have now joined Chris who I think has used them for about the last 20 years! It is scheduled to snow all night and most of tomorrow but hopefully the wind will die down a bit so we can at least have some visibility. But whatever the weather I’m guaranteed to have warm feet!
